Glabar Park is a quiet and conveniently-located neighbourhood in Bay Ward, in Ottawa's west end. Bounded by Maitland and Fairlawn Avenues to the east and west, and Carling Avenue and the Quensway to the north and south, Glabar park is easily accessible to many of the west end's major arteries. A variety of shopping outlets and dining options are available along Carling Avenue, including Carlingwood Mall, which features dozens of retail stores, restaurants, banks, and a grocery store. Public transportation is also nearby, making for a convenient commute into the city's downtown.
The proximity of such amenities, as well as its slight remove from the city's bustle, often make this area attractive to young families. Many children in Glabar Park attend D. Roy Kennedy Public School, which is located on Woodroffe Avenue, just beyond the neighbourhood's western boundary, while Woodroffe High School and Algonquin College, renowned for it's post-secondary programs, are also nearby. Glabar Park is home to two beautiful parks: Castlewood Park, which is a dog-walker's delight, and Kingsmere Park, which features a large wading pool is the summer and, in the winter, a community ice rink maintained by the local community association. The Carlingwood Branch of the Ottawa Public Library is also nearby, on the northern end of Woodroffe Avenue, and just beyond that are the bike trails and natural beauty of the Ottawa River.
First built in the late 1940s and 1950s, the neighbourhood offers a variety of detached homes and townhouse for young couples, professionals and families looking to settle down, as well as some more recently-constructed multi-unit condo buildings. Sometimes affectionately known as The Glabarhood, Glabar Park is peaceful, family-friendly, and only a fifteen-minute drive from downtown Ottawa.
