CREA Canadian home sales edge higher in February

According to statistics released on March 15th by The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA), national resale housing activity improved in February 2012 after having declined in January. Highlights: • Home sales rose 1.4 per cent from January to February. • Actual (not seasonally adjusted) activity was up 8.6 per cent from February 2011 levels. • The number of newly listed homes climbed 1.9 per cent from January to February. • The national sales-to-new listings ratio was little changed, remaining firmly in balanced territory. • The national average home price advanced 2.0 per cent on a year-over-year basis in February. Home prices up in February but gains slowing

The MLS® Home Price Index, the leading measure of Canadian home prices, continued rising in February 2012, according to statistics released on March 23rd by The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA). Year-over-year comparisons continued shrinking, providing further evidence that Canadian home price growth may be topping out. Highlights: The Aggregate Composite MLS® Home Price Index in February 2012 was up 5.1 per cent from its year-ago level, the smallest increase since June 2011. Toronto posted the largest increase (7.3 per cent), but momentum continued fading. Price increases also moderated further in Calgary (2.5 per cent) and Montreal (1.6 per cent).
